St. Petri: Renovation of the Tower’s Outer Masonry (Phase 1)

First the diagnosis, then the therapy: A detailed material examination of the outer masonry of the St. Petri tower not only told the experts a story spanning many centuries.

It also showed where water ingress and spalling had occurred – and which compatible materials needed to be used and in which places, to avoid negative chemical reactions.

Measures

The measures included the restoration of the exterior masonry on all four sides of the tower and the section of the west facade directly above the portal, which is below the tower. The following was undertaken:

  • Replacement of damaged monastery-format bricks
  • Renewal of the joints
  • Monument-appropriate restoration of the wrought-iron anchors and window frames
  • Renewal of the natural stone cornices
  • Renewal of the lightning protection system

Good to know

Inside the tower structure, restoration work was carried out on the south pillar of the south chapel. Initially, the deteriorating Japanese paper on the coatings was stabilized and secured while maintaining the backing.

Additionally, a few areas of the coatings were uncovered during the work.
