Restoration of the Spatial Shell

The Church of St. Marien, a shining example of Gothic architecture, is the site of extensive restoration efforts aimed at preserving the artistic heritage of Lübeck. Under the direction of restorer Lothar Schwink, detailed work began in 1953 on the spandrel paintings in the choir and nave, as well as on the spatial treatment of the side aisles and chapels. Schwink's technique, characterized by broader and freer brushstrokes, contrasts with the more methodical approaches of earlier restorers like Malskat and Fey, whose new treatments did not incorporate historical findings.

These restoration initiatives at St. Marien illustrate the complexity and significance of the efforts undertaken by 7Türme+ to maintain the integrity and beauty of these historical artworks. Every step, from cleaning the polychrome paintings to precise retouching, is conducted with the utmost care and in strict adherence to conservation standards. Special emphasis is placed on preserving the authenticity of the colours and techniques while only correcting newer damages.

Measures

  • Stripple Technique Retouching: These were executed in the past to make additions clear and readable. The breadth and freedom of the brushstrokes in the retouching are particularly noteworthy.
  • Application of New Treatments: While these treatments cite medieval painting, they are not based on direct findings on the object. In the past, they were treated with a wire brush to create an aged appearance. Stencil transfers were used to design crown ornaments, indicating a reconstruction.
  • Dry Cleaning with Wishab Sponges: This contemporary method is now used specifically for the partial removal of dirt that has settled on the joints of the vaulted masonry.
  • Glazing, Slightly Tinted Whitish Paint: This was and is applied in the lower wall areas to visually unify the wall zones and aesthetically complete the restoration.
  • Consolidation of the Paint Layer: Parallel to the cleaning work, measures are now being taken to consolidate the paint layer to prevent the loss of stripple retouching during cleaning.
  • Retouching to Fill Missing Areas: These are only done in areas that were damaged after the last major restoration. The colour tone of the surroundings is applied with a glaze before executing the stripple retouching.
